modular ski mittensmittens that last longer

How can wear and tear on a mitten be slowed down?
Analysis
Disruption
I analysed several gloves and mittens before I started to rethink the whole construction of a mitten.
Wear points
Gloves and mittens present different issues. I decided to focus on mittens, as wear and failure usually occur in defined areas and the manufacturing process is less complex – an important aspect when it comes to circularity.

Sacrificial layer
The outer shell protects the underlying layers and is designed as a replaceable component. When damaged, it can be exchanged without affecting the rest of the product, allowing the leather layer to be used throughout its full lifecycle.

Every single part can be exchanged

Circularity
Material
Renewable raw materials · Strong focus on sustainability · Foundation for the whole product
Production
Skiing only takes place at certain hotspots → local (financial issue) · Material-pure and modular approach
Distribution
Either directly to the customer or via retail outlets
Point of sale
Individual parts also available · Sensitive to returns and repairs
Use
Care is a key factor · Building a certain bond · Individual drying · Use over several seasons
Repair & exchange
Must be possible locally · Possibly involve regional tailors · Replacement of individual wear parts through stores and online shops · Independent repair by purchasing the necessary materials · Repair videos as instructions
Return
Returns via regional sports shops · A percentage discount on the new item upon return · Return included in the packaging of the new item
Material recovery
Recovery of important raw materials · Proper recycling of non-recyclable materials
Building the whole brand identity
A strong brand
Building a strong brand is more important than ever. It stands out through a cohesive and well-defined brand identity.
Website
The website plays a key role, forming the foundation of the entire logistics system and enabling a rethinking of the product lifecycle. It encourages customers to exchange worn-out parts instead of purchasing new mittens.
